Wema is an 11-year-old Maasai girl from Arusha, Tanzania, living in challenging circumstances typical of many children in her community. She resides with her mother and brother Shedrack, having lost her father. Like many Maasai children, Wema has never attended school due to the significant barriers facing her community. The Maasai region faces substantial educational challenges, with approximately 80% illiteracy rates and many children unable to go to school because of poverty and the need to help with family herding. For Wema, the nearest school is very far away, making education difficult to access. She dreams of being like her brother, Shedrack, when she grows up. She likes studying her vowels and hopes that one day her sponsor will send her cookies.
